The Dandelion’s Wish

In this sequel to The Dandelion Queen, The Dandelion’s Wish tells the tale of a dandelion’s journey into existence beginning as a seed who is gracefully blown away to an abundant flower garden. As the dandelion’s roots grow deeper in the belief that it is indeed a beautiful flower, it is befriended by Louise, the Rose Queen of the garden. Together with the Dandelion Queen, Louise sings a song of acceptance, compassion and love. In a beautiful and simple story that will charm children and adults alike, Mr. Optimistic allegorically weaves the true meaning of compassion throughout while reminding us all of the power of love and acceptance.

The Dandelion Queen

A little girl finds beauty and wonder in the most unexpected places in Mr. Optimistic’s delightful debut children’s book, The Dandelion Queen. All Grace wants is to pick the perfect birthday gift for her mommy—so she ventures out to the fields around her house to gather the most beautiful flowers she can find. But all she sees in every direction are dandelions…plain, yellow, ordinary dandelions… Just as Grace is about to give up her search, she makes a wish and then she is visited by the beautiful Dandelion Queen, who tells Grace an enchanted story about the beauty that lies beneath. While most people view dandelions as a simple weed, the Dandelion Queen explains to Grace the true purpose of the delicate flowers and their mysterious white puff that makes wishes come true. Dazzled by the appearance of the Dandelion Queen and all the wisdom she has imparted, Grace runs home carrying armfuls of golden-yellow dandelions. As soon as she arrives back at the house, Grace sings a beautiful song to her mother that narrates the tale she just learned from the Dandelion Queen. Now, thanks to the magical appearance of the Dandelion Queen, Grace’s mommy may just have the best birthday yet and Grace’s wish may have come true!

My 6 year old fist grader loves this book! Whimsical and a welcome change of pace from many other standard children’s books. This was a good addition to the collection. Clever and unique writing style makes it fun for her to read and also enjoyable for adults to read out loud.

Grace is seeking to find the perfect flower to pick for her mother’s birthday. She walks along until she comes across a field with a round, puffy flower. It appears to be the perfect flower to use to make a wish. When she blows on it, The Dandelion Queen suddenly appears surrounded by beautiful yellow flowers. She explains her plight to Grace. All the Queen wants to do is to spread the beauty of flowers everywhere, but some call her a weed because she is unable to control the flower’s direction and path. Grace hurriedly picks a bunch of yellow flowers and runs home to her mother. She explains what happened and the new friend she has made. When her mother tucks Grace into bed, she reveals a secret that lets Grace know that her wish will come true. This book is written in a prose style that contains rhyming sentences. It flows easily and is not forced. The illustrations are simple and tender. I would especially recommend the book as a bedtime story, but it would be appropriate for any age child.
